Elda “Kay” Huckabay Gibbons of Stephenville, TX passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2023.
Kay was born on Monday, July 7, 1941, in Quanah, TX to Eldes and Evelyn Huckabay. She attended college at East Central Oklahoma State University, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and Midwestern State University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education, a master’s degree in music as well as certificates in Special Education and Administration. Kay taught school in several towns in Oklahoma and Kansas before moving her family to Vernon, TX in 1974. She was the principal at Central Elementary School, where she retired after 30 years of service. Kay returned to work at the Region 9 Service Center as a Federal Programs Specialist until her second retirement in 2016.
Kay enjoyed spending time with her family and had a talent for many things. She was an avid musician; she privately taught many children to play piano and served as the organist for a congregation in Vernon. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eldes and Evelyn in 1991, and her brother Donald Ray Huckabay in 1959.
She is survived by her children Janet Thompson and husband Edward of Medicine Park, OK; Donald Gibbons of Sherman, TX; and Jerre Gibbons and wife Angela of Stephenville, TX as well as 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and a nephew.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 19, 2023 at 11 am at the Eldorado Cemetery in Eldorado, OK. Services are under the direction of Stephenville Funeral Home.
