On October 30, 2021, Douglas Mayo, 101, and one of the greatest generation, died after a long, well lived life.  Douglas, born August 22, 1920, was the first of six children born to Robert Nathan and Dartha Annie (Norris) Mayo in the Pilot Knob community. He spent his early years helping his family oversee an experimental farm for Bane Peanut Company in that area.  In 1942, Douglas enlisted in the Navy but after boot camp was assigned to the Third Battalion, Nineteenth Marines, Third Division, and Fleet Marine Force for the duration of his service.  During that time, Douglas saw action in New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Guadalcanal, Bougainville, and was in the first wave landing on Guam.       

 Most of Douglas’ career was in construction – both residential and commercial.  He worked as a master carpenter and as a superintendent for different companies and built homes, schools, warehouses, court houses, manufacturing plants and office buildings. 

One of Douglas’s greatest pleasures was traveling and RVing throughout the U. S.   He also enjoyed visiting Antigua and, at age 88 traveled with his son and grandson to Costa Rica.

Douglas enjoyed being with others and spent much of his leisure time dancing. watching sports, traveling, and keeping up with his children and grandchildren.  His favorite time was spent at family gatherings where he enjoyed seeing as many children, grandchildren, and relatives as possible.  He was a Shriner and member of the Church of Christ.

Douglas is survived by his children Douglas Mayo (Donna), Stephenville, Rita   Cook (Gerald), Stephenville, Robert Mayo, Allen, and grandchildren Chris Mayo (Heather), Matt Mayo (Lisa), Kate Cook (Ernie Podrasky), Robert Cook (Amber), and Jennifer Adams (Ryan) along with great grandchildren Hannah, Lauren, Meredith, Cleo, Haley, Emily, and Blaze.

Arrangements have been made at Stephenville Funeral Home.  There will be a viewing, 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM on Sunday, October 31st at Stephenville Funeral Home and  a celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 1st, at Stephenville Funeral Home.. Pall bearers will be his grandsons. Douglas will be laid to rest in Pilot Knob Cemetery, a cemetery in the Pilot Knob Community that was donated by a family member after the Civil War.  Memorials may be sent to the Pilot Knob Cemetery Association, 316 Tanglewood Circle, Stephenville, TX, 76401
