Wayland Virl (Sonny) Young, a beloved father and dedicated community member, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on September 6, 1943, in Stephenville, Texas, Wayland grew up surrounded by the wide-open spaces of the Texas countryside, where his love for the land and hard work were nurtured from an early age.
Wayland proudly served in the United States Navy from January 1, 1961, to September 5, 1964, achieving the rank of Corpsman E3. His years of service reflected his deep commitment to helping others, a quality he carried throughout his life. After returning home, Wayland became a dedicated construction worker and farmer, embodying the values of resilience and perseverance that defined his work ethic.
His wisdom and life lessons would shape the lives of all who knew him. He was a devoted father to his children, Tammie Pavese and Kevin Young, and his stepchildren, Jarrell Dowell II, Darla Dowell, John Dowell and Debra Dowell, who cherishes countless cherished memories of their time together.
Wayland’s warmth, humor, and steadfast love will remain a guiding light in the lives of those he left behind.
In this difficult time, the family expresses their gratitude to Wings over Texas Hospice and Pecan Creek Nursing Home in Hamilton for their support and care.
Wayland was preceded in death by: wife Patricia Young, parents J.T. Young & I.V. Young, sisters Maxine Dowell & Darlene McCoy.
At Wayland’s request the family will hold a private graveside memorial at a later date.
