James “Jim” Ray Scroggins, 77, of Stephenville, Texas, passed away leaving behind a legacy of hard work, loyalty, laughter, and love.
Born on October 7, 1948, Jim never met a stranger. He was the kind of man who would lend a hand when it was needed, and work from sunrise to sunset without complaint. He believed in keeping his word, taking care of his family, and doing a job right the first time.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Scroggins; his father, Charlie Scroggins; and his sister, Cindee Lou Bruman.
The greatest joy of Jim’s life was his family. He is survived by his loving wife, of 23 years, Lisa Turner Scroggins.
He leaves behind his children: Charley, Jim and John Scroggins
Leah Loyd and husband Shane; James David Halford and wife Lesley; Tony Halford; and Derrick Halford and wife Monika.
He was a proud grandad to Chloe Thomas and husband Chris, Nicolas Loyd, Macy Loyd, Charly Scroggins, Allison Halford, Hannah Halford, Keigen Halford, Ayden Halford, Blaikelynn Halford, and Myles Dodgen. He also leaves behind his beloved nephew, Cole Lee Bruman and wife Tiffini, along with great-nieces and nephew Allie Hayes, and Ava, and Grant Bruman. And best truck boss Annie.
For more than 43 years, Jim dedicated himself to building Circle J Backhoe Service & Construction, Inc. What started as a business became a lifelong passion and a source of pride. Through countless long days and years of determination, he built not only a successful company but a reputation for honesty, dependability, and excellence. It brought him great comfort knowing that the business he loved will continue under the ownership and leadership of James David and Lesley Halford.
When the workday was over, Jim enjoyed the things that made life exciting. He loved drag racing, collecting and shooting firearms, traveling, and riding his Harley with Lisa. He appreciated simple pleasures, good conversations, and time spent with the people he loved most.
Those who knew Jim will remember his strength, his stubborn determination, his generous heart, and the way he showed his love through actions more than words. He was a protector, a provider, a mentor, and a friend. His presence filled a room, and his absence will be deeply felt.
While our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the years, memories, lessons, and love he gave us. His story lives on through his family, his friends, the business he built, and everyone whose life was made better because Jim was a part of it.
A funeral service will be held in Jim's honor on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 2PM at Stephenville Funeral Home. A visitation will be on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, from 6-8PM at Stephenville Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Erath County United Way, or Harbin Volunteer Fire Department, causes that were dear to Jim and his family.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
